White House and Democratic Lawmakers Strategize to Bolster Border Security
The White House and top congressional Democrats are planning several initiatives to enhance their border security stance ahead of the upcoming presidential debate. Potential actions include issuing an executive order to restrict asylum seekers, revisiting a stalled bipartisan border bill in the Senate, and possibly having President Joe Biden visit the border, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Some Democrats on Capitol Hill have urged the White House to consider another border visit by Biden in the coming weeks. With border arrests down partly due to increased Mexican enforcement efforts, the White House seeks to capitalize on this respite to strengthen Biden's reelection campaign. However, officials are preparing for a possible surge in border crossings this summer and are implementing policy changes to deter migrants and reassure voters of their commitment to border security.
A border visit, if it happens, would be Biden’s second this year and third since taking office. Discussions about this visit and other border security measures are ongoing but not publicly confirmed. The White House is also consulting with Senate Democrats on reviving a border policy package that previously stalled, signaling their aggressive stance on border security.
The administration's efforts are partly constrained by limited tools available to manage the border situation in the short term. Timing for the executive action on border policy is being considered in relation to Mexico's early June election and the presidential debate.
The White House aims to avoid another border crisis and shift the focus onto congressional Republicans who previously opposed a stringent border security bill. Senate Democrats, led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Chris Murphy, intend to reintroduce the bill blocked by Republicans following opposition from former President Trump. Biden continues to criticize Republicans for derailing the comprehensive immigration reform bill during his campaign appearances.
